SEE WHO'S WATCHING YOU WITH CLUSTRMAPS

ClustrMaps is a fun and informative widget that you can embed on your website, or the websites of your students.  Simply visit the ClustrMaps websites, enter the URL of the site you want to create a map for, and an HTML code will be generated for you.  ClustrMaps appears as a world map with red dots, varying in size based on the amount of visitors from a particular region.  Of course, since discovering ClustrMaps my blog has had an all-time low number of visitors (an extremely modest 14) but what's really interesting is that I had no idea people were visiting my website from their homes in Ireland, Australia and Singapore.  The idea of someone across the globe stumbling into my humble little blog is so neat!  As a student, I would be so excited to see how many people were viewing my writing portfolio, and where those readers might be located.  With that said, (shameless begging) please forward the URL for my blog to as many foreign countries as possible!  I want more dots!

UPDATE (7-8-11): I was noticing some major inconsistencies between my clustr map and the statistics that I was receiving from Weebly (my website host).  For instance, as of today, my clustr map reports 130 visitors to my website; however, according to Weebly, I had 248 visitors yesterday alone.  With the question "what's up with that?" spinning in my head, I discovered that Clustrmap only counts visits to the page where the map itself is displayed, so if anyone visits another blog or post (anything other than the page where I embedded the clustr map) it won't be counted.  Weebly, on the other hand, counts visits to any blog or post on my website.  This makes sense, really.  Not sure how to "fix" this solution so that Clustrmaps counts all of my page views without embedding the map on every since page, though.  I'll play around with it and, in the meantime, you may see some clustrmaps randomly appearing.  :)

UPDATE 12-16-11
A HUGE thank you to the ClustrMaps team for explaining why Weebly's tallies are inconsistent with ClustrMap's stats.  And another thank you to ClustrMaps for providing such accurate information without counting duplicate visitors or IP addresses.  Comparing ClustrMaps' visitor count to Weebly's visitor count will provide me with a whole new layer of data!  (Please the comment posted below by the ClustrMaps team.)

Hi There,

Just thought I would post a comment as I seem to have been spotted on your clustrmap. I frequently log into your blog and I love it.

I am a teacher of business and accounting working for a government training organisation. My students are all adults ranging in age from 18 to 70+. I live in Dublin.

I am also a basketball coach and I am also club treasurer, Public Relations Officer and general seller of education to the underprivileged kids within the community.

I am also a student. As my undergraduate degree was in business, majoring in accounting, I felt it necessary to undertake a masters in education and training, majoring in elearning, at DCU in dublin. It is a 2 year taught degree culminating in a thesis based on action research to improve our practice in the field of education.

I have created a wiki to help my night time adult students to catch up on missed lectures or recap on lessons if they wish.

I feel that I have not entered into the spirit of wikis as you have (i.e. I am able to look in on your class wikis which are very informative). My classes are closed as such as only invited members can join. Also I do not allow my students to alter or upload content other than discussion topics. I am hoping that this will change over time. When my research is complete I will send you an invite and you can peruse at your leisure.

Anyway, back to you and your amazing blog! It is a fountain of tech knowledge and just to give you a sample of the items that I have found most useful and/or interesting either as a teacher, student or mum of 4 teenagers who can also benefit from some of your posts, I thought I would list them here:

- Screenr
- No fear Shakespeare
- Awsomescreenshots
- Manyeyes
- Voki
- Docstoc (great as I'm not HTML savvy (yet!))
- Glogstar

Recently the online plagiarism resource looks interesting as I near the end of my dissertation writing.

I really want to thank you for sharing your enthusiasm for a number of your passions. Recently in a meeting with my supervisor and a critical friend I mentioned your blog and they instantly wanted a link so I guess I wont be the only Irish head looking in on you from across the water.

I hope to be able to delve into your more creative wikis after my studies have finished as I am already exploring ways of filling the void that education leaves once you have graduated. I have decided that I am going to write songs which I guess is poetry by another name eh? I have an american friend (more than one of course ha) who is a teacher and a poet and a coach. Her name is Nancy Boutilier. She wrote a book called On the Eight Day Adam Slept Alone. She teachers at Oberlin College in Ohio.

I will go now and at least you chalk down one stereotype as being true i.e. The Irish can talk the hind legs off a donkey!

Thanks again

Liz

p.s. Please excuse any grammatical errors or errors of transportation i.e. across the Atlantic

Liz,

Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words! I started this blog as a way to keep track of all the tools that I have stumbled upon during workshops, seminars, web searches, and word of mouth; I'm glad to hear that I can share some of my findings with others. I'm glad to here that you are having success with wikis. For several years, I was intimidated by them; I thought that they must be way too difficult for me to use. I took a month to "play" with a private wiki to get the hang of it, and now I can't stop using them! I would love to see your wiki, and to see how your students are using it. Please keep me updated with your work. I would really like to exchange ideas with you.

Best Wishes,

Jessica

P.S. Your grammar is excellent, and I'm really appreciative of your thorough comment. I was not aware that the Irish had a reputation for being talkative. I thought that was just a teacher thing.

Hi Jessica - many thanks for using ClustrMaps! I only just noticed your posting, and I thought it would be useful to clarify three things about the 'variation' in our numbers and your own Weebly stats:

1. 'Counting visitors to every page': as long as you have our thumbnail map installed in the 'sidebar' (where it already is on your blog pages) or 'footer' (where it already is on your other pages), then ALL visitors will get counted correctly - and duplicates will be correctly removed. Thus I have just looked at about 6 items on your site, but I will be counted only once in total.

2. Our policy is '1 unique visit per IP address per DAY' (others use a 30-minute window!): that is why totals can be so different. We have a detailed explanation of the differences published in our own blog posting entitled "Why are different counters so different?" at http://blog.clustrmaps.com/2010/10/11/why-are-different-counters-so-different/ . Please take a look at that, which I think will clarify a few issues for you.

3. We now provide real-time dots (in yellow) and even Tweet Map overlays. Have a look at http://blog.clustrmaps.com/cool-new-stuff (it helps if you switch to the new Javascript version of our HTML).

I hope that's of some use. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if we can help you in any other way.

All the best, and thanks for using ClustrMaps!
